Difficulty

Typically suitable for high clearance 2WD

This trail is rated Level 2, Easy. That level is typically suitable for a high clearance 2WD vehicle. Stock equipment is enough, though the surface may test tire traction and ground clearance. Expect dirt or rocky road that is usually not maintained after rain or snow. Obstacles are generally under 9 inches, such as rocks, dips or ruts, and small ledges or shallow water crossings under 12 inches are possible. The road is one to two vehicles wide. The driver's log does not call out any obstacle that needs special attention. There is an optional harder line at Level 3, Moderate, best suited to a high clearance 4x4. It brings more rock or undulating surface, obstacles up to 12 inches, and places where careful tire placement helps. You can take that line or stay on the easier one.

Terrain

The road is an unpaved Forest Service road. Nearby sections of Lime Creek Road are described as washboard, and the surface can change with weather and grading. The road follows the Lime Creek drainage through high-elevation forest and grassy openings. Dispersed campsites are scattered along the road, and some are large enough for groups and trailers.

Highlights

Lime Creek Road is open to motor vehicles seasonally. COTREX lists the closed period as roughly mid-March to mid-May, so check current conditions with the Divide Ranger District before you go. In winter the area is used by the Upper Rio Grande Nordic Club for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Dispersed camping is allowed on the district up to 300 feet from the road. Check with the district for current rules and fire restrictions.
