Drill Hole Road - Level 4

Drill Hole Road is a short backcountry route in Iron County in southwestern Utah. It starts on the open desert and climbs a hillside before working north through rocky ground to a point where the route continues.

The route is a quick outing that suits a half-day trip or an add-on to other trails in the area. It has a few spots that need slow, careful driving.

This trail is rated Moderate, Level 4. At this level, expect to use low-range gearing, and undercarriage damage is possible. The surface is more rock or undulated, with obstacles under 18 inches such as ledges, drops and short climbs that call for careful tire placement. The road can be steep, loose and slightly off-camber, and it is generally one vehicle wide with places to pass. The climb up the hill is the hardest spot at Level 4, and loose rock there needs care. The rest of the trail is easier. A rocky, rutted area near the end needs patience and was judged around Level 3. The start has a spot noted at Level 2.

Terrain

The trail climbs a hillside early on, with loose rock on the climb, then runs through a rock garden where the hill meets the next section. Later there is a rocky, rutted stretch that is best taken slowly, at the point where the route continues beyond the end of this report.
