Cedar Hollow West - Level 2

Cedar Hollow West is a short backcountry route in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest east of Kamas, on the south flank of the Uinta Mountains. It sits next to the Cedar Hollow OHV trails and the larger Taylor Fork trail system, which are popular with ATV, UTV and dirt bike riders.

The route runs through high country with mixed aspen, conifer and open hillsides. It makes an easy side trip or a quick outing if you are already in the Cedar Hollow area.

Difficulty

Typically suitable for high clearance 2WD

This route is rated Easy (level 2), which means it is typically suitable for a high clearance 2WD vehicle. Stock equipment is sufficient, but the surface can test tire traction and ground clearance in places. Expect dirt and rocky road with possible rocks, dips or ruts under about 9 inches. The road is typically unmaintained after rain or snow. Shallow water crossings and small ledges under about 12 inches are possible, and the road is usually one to two vehicles wide. The driver's log does not call out any obstacle that needs special attention.

Terrain

The route follows a dirt and gravel road across forested slopes and hollows in the Uinta foothills. Aspen and conifer stands line parts of it, with open hillside between them. The surface can be loose or rutted in spots and softens after rain or snowmelt. Snow can linger into late spring at this elevation.

Highlights

The Cedar Hollow area has a trailhead and campground that give access to a wider network of forest roads and OHV trails, so the route is easy to combine with other riding. Cattle graze on the surrounding hills in summer, so watch for livestock on the road. Aspen stands make the area especially scenic in early fall.
